LED Camping Lanterns

There are a variety of camping lanterns available on the market at present, the most popular types being; battery, candle and gas. Lately there has been another addition, the LED (light emitting diodes) lantern. These lanterns aim to bring camping equipment into a new era with their lightweight, versatile design and ease of use.

So before you pay out your hard earned money on a new lantern, check out some of the features of that LED lanterns have to offer.

Features of LED Lanterns:

A well designed LED lantern is a durable piece of kit, and can take an astonishing amount of impact, before “hanging up it's boots.” The LED bulbs themselves can last up to 100,000 hours before needing to be replaced, now compare that to the other lantern types on the market.

Depending on the make, model and the initial charge of the lantern, the burn time can be anywhere form 3 – 8 hours on full power and up to 70 hours on night-light mode. When the battery power starts to drain the light will inevitably dim, but unlike other incandescent bulbs, an LED lantern will still project a white light.

The bulbs themselves are initially more expensive then the various other incandescent bulbs on the market. However, the savings in the long run plus the reliability factor, makes the initial cost worthwhile. When the battery does begin to fade, some can be wound up by taking power from a back up or emergency source within the lantern. This enables it to function for up to ten minutes extra on full power and a few hours on night-light.

Another huge plus point for choosing an LED lantern is the safety factor. These lanterns can be brought and hung inside a tent without any danger of a fire starting whatsoever. Which can only make them highly recommendable for campers who prefer their camping experience in a tent.

One of the disadvantages of buying an LED lantern is that they don't give off as much light as the other types e.g. gas etc...Again, whether this is actually a downside or not would all depend on the purpose you want the lantern to serve.

If outdoor use only is the intended purpose then the projected lighting might not be strong enough over a large distance. But for use within the confines of a tent, then LED lanterns are an excellent choice.
